I recently took a trip to New Orleans to attend the Professional Photographers of America Imaging USA convention where I was honored with two of my images being placed in the Top Ten in the “Wedding” category for the Grand Imaging Awards. One of them took second place (one of the greatest honors of my career, thus far). Anyway, the degree ceremony was a black tie event, so my assistant, Renee, was excited to wear a new dress that she had bought. Unfortunately, we didn’t get any pictures of her in her dress (which, for Renee, was tragic) So after the ceremony, we decided to try to get an image of her displaying her in her dress. Well that turned into an all out session. I only had my little Canon G12 point and shoot. Now the G12 is an excellent point and shoot camera but it is still a point and shoot camera. So I wanted to see what was possible with a very limited tool while using only the light that was available to me. In this case, on this evening, it was mostly streetlights that were the main light source. We then went to a jazz club and saw Barry Stephenson’s Pocket, a VERY COOL modern jazz band that, unfortunately, you would NEVER see in Cleveland (they were the coolest part of the trip. Check out Barry’s website -HERE-). I stretched the G12 all the way up to it’s capabilities in the club. You will see a lot of grain and some square formatting, but overall, it shows that with good light, you can create with any tool. Here are a few images (Renee would be more than happy if you left a comment).
